Welcome to the website of Metropolitan A.M.E. Church, the National Cathedral of African Methodism. Since our founding, in 1838, we have been spreading Christ’s liberating gospel in Washington, DC through our various ministries and outreach. The church has also had an historic voice in the lives of black people and others throughout the nation and world.
Please take the time to explore beyond the home page and learn about our rich history, our worship services, our ministries and our service to the community. Worship with us on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. and on Wednesdays at noon for our Hour of Power Service. Church School is held on Sundays at 10:30 a.m., and Bible Study is held on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. We are located at 1518 M Street, NW in Washington, DC. Call (202) 331-1426 for more information.

Leontyne Price to be Honored at 34th Presentation of Handel's Messiah

WASHINGTON—A gala cast of soloists and a special Award to invited guest legendary soprano Leontyne Price will be featured when Handel’s Messiah is presented at Metropolitan A.M.E. Church, 1518 M Street, N.W. on Sunday, December 5 at 5 p.m. Read more. . .

The devastation that swept the Gulf Coast five years ago when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, Florida, Louisiana , Mississippi and Alabama left 1,800 people dead, tens of thousands of people displaced, entire sections of New Orleans destroyed. It became one of the nation’s worst natural disasters..
The story grew worse each day as the monster storm hit—people standing on rooftops crying for help, the crowds at the Superdome hungry, sick, desperate and neglected, 80 percent of New Orleans under water. Families were separated and many went to Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas and points north. The federal government drew heated criticism for failing to sufficiently respond to the victims’ desperate plight. Read more. . .

Mrs. Shirley Sherrod, former Georgia Director of Rural Development for the U.S. Department of Agriculture who was forced to resign after a conservative blogger posted video excerpts of a speech she made and distorted the context to make her appear racist, spoke at Metropolitan A.M.E. The African Methodist Episcopal Church
The African Methodist Episcopal Church has a unique and glorious history. It was unique in that it is the first major religious denomination in the Western World that had its origin over sociological and theological beliefs and differences. It rejected the negative theological interpretations which rendered persons of African descent second class citizens. Theirs was a theological declaration that God is God all the time and for every body.
